The Secretary of State, Michael Gove visited Cuckoohall School
on the 26th May 2010.
The new Secretary of State, Michael Gove chose Cuckoo Hall Primary School to make his first official school visit. This was in recognition of Cuckoo Hall’s outstanding and continued success. Mr. Gove was accompanied by Schools Minister, Jonathan Hill. For Cuckoo Hall to be selected for this visit was a huge privilege.
Patricia Sowter, Headteacher, took the opportunity to discuss the government’s new policy that will allow successful Primary schools to become Academies.
The visit was an important national event which brought a great deal of media attention. A very exciting day for the children, staff and whole school community.
The Secretary ofState met with the Headteacher, Mrs Patricia Sowter, Deputy Headteacher, Ms Sarah Oliver and the School Council
The children had the opportunity to ask questions such as "how difficult is to become a Secretary of State?"
In the School Library, live interviews from SKY NEWS Channel 4 and BBC NEWS took place. In the corridors ITV, ITN, Teachers TV, and members of the local press queued up to get a chance to speak with the Headteacher, Patricia Sowter and the Secretary of State, Michael Gove.
Mr. Gove took the opportunity to visit a year 2 classroom where he spent time reading with the children, and asked them questions. He told the children that he was extremely impressed with their excellent reading skills.
On the way out, both the Secretary of State, Michael Gove and the Schools Minister, Mr Jonathan Hill, signed our visitors book.
A memorable end to such an exciting and unique visit.
